Recognition:
1. GESS Field Trip to Encounters With Canada in Ottawa, February 11-18, 2012

Ben provided a presentation on the enriching experiences he encountered during Inuit Week at
Encounters With Canada. Ms. Morin also shared positive remarks regarding the professional
development opportunities provided for teachers during the week in Ottawa.
2. KSS Grade 12 Fine Arts Students – Film Presentation “Acceptance”

Mrs. Holmwood shared her students’ involvement in the project, “Ten Thousand Voices”. Globally,
103 schools were involved in creating videos that celebrated diversity. KSS students produced an
outstanding video on acceptance of homosexuality.
3. District of Peachland Youth of the Year Award
The Board of Education recognized Lauren Boorm an, a student at Mount Boucherie Secondary
School, for receiving the District of Peachland Youth of the Year Award.
4. Cst. Sherri Lund, West Kelowna RCMP Liaison Officer
The Board of Education introduced and welcomed Cst. Sherri Lund, as the newly appointed West
Kelowna RCMP Liaison Officer.
Superintendent’s Report:
The Superintendent reported on the following:
– It is Cancer Fundraising Week at Kelowna Secondary School. KSS students and staff are
hosting the annual Cancer Fundraiser Drive-Thru Breakfast at the Rona parking lot on May 24th
from 6:30 – 9:30 a.m. On Friday, May 25th, the KSS Annual Cancer Headshaving will take place
during the lunch hour in the front parking lot. Donations will be forwarded to the BC Cancer
Foundation.
– Staff has now completed five community forums to engage the community in discussions
regarding the future of the District’s Education Facility Plan. The Board of Education will be
meeting on May 30th to review the community input received to date and to receive staff’s initial
recommendations for future planning.
– On May 28th, Okanagan Mission Secondary will be hosting a public event to determine
community interest in raising funds to build a theatre during the construction of the OKM
addition. Information regarding this event is available on the OKM website.
– A video was recently sent to all staff recognizing their involvement in increasing the student
graduation rate and number of students receiving Evergreen certificates. A bulletin was also
sent to all staff acknowledging their efforts in supporting student success and celebrating the
number of years of continuousimprovement (see attached).
Action Items:
1. School Act Class Size/Class Composition Update Report: April 2012
The Board of Education approved the School Act Class Size/Class Composition Update Report for
the month of April 2012. Additionally, the Declaration of Appropriate Learning Situation by the
Superintendent was approved for submission to the Minister of Education.
2. International Education Annual Report
The Board of Education reaffirmed support for the International Education Program in its current
configuration, holding to the enrolment guidelines established by the Board of Education which sets
the capacity of the program at approximately 200 FTE students and an additional 50 short-term
students.
3. Amended Policy 425 “Student Fees”
The Board of Education approved amendments to Policy 425 “Student Fees”.
4. Ministry Early Learning Agreement Approval
The Board of Education approved the new Early Learning Agreement with the Ministry of Education.
5. District One Goal Statement
The Board of Education approved the following overarching goal statement for the 2012-2013 school
year:
Each Central Okanagan School District student (K-12) will provide evidence of being a
learner, thinker, innovator, collaborator and contributor.
6. Transportation – Additional Service Routes
The Board of Education waived the requirement in Policy 470 “Transportation Services Management”
to collect the actual cost for Additional Service Routes and, for the 2012/2013 school year, set the
Transportation Charge for all riders at the level established in Motion 12P-059.
