March 28, 2012 Board Highlights

Superintendent’s Report:
The Superintendent reported on the following:
– The “Art in Action” display of outstanding middle/secondary school artwork continues at the
Kelowna Art Gallery until June 24, 2012.
– The 35th Annual BC Interior Jazz Festival will be held at the Kelowna Community Theatre from April 12-14.
Commendations to all those involved with the organization and facilitation of this outstanding event.
– On Thursday, March 29th, the District’s Human Resources Department will be hosting the
annual Employee Recognition Ceremonies where new employees and employees with 10, 20,
30, 35 and 40 years of service are recognized.
– The District will be participating in Earth Hour on Saturday, March 31st
, 2012 from 8:30 p.m.- 9:30 p.m. and will be encouraging staff to participate in Earth Hour by reducing household use
of electricity as well.
– The District wishes West Kelowna success with its “Hockeyville” Day events on Saturday, March 31st and recognizes the staff, students, and community members who have been
involved in the community bid for Hockeyville 2012.
– The Minister of Education announced the passing of Bill 22 on March 17, 2012. Senior staff is currently working through the details of Bill 22,
including the reporting requirements for the new Learning Improvement Fund. The Superintendent will be consulting with the Central
Okanagan Teachers’ Association regarding the plan for the support of vulnerable students in
the future.
Action Items:
1. School Act Class Size/Class Composition Update Report: February 2012
The Board of Education approved the School Act Class Size/Class Composition Update Report for
the month of February 2012. Additionally, the Declaration of Appropriate Learning Situation was
approved for submission to the Minister of Education.
2. Annual Facility Grant Plan for 2012/2013 to 2016/2017
The Board of Education approved the Annual Facility Grant Plan for 2012/2013 to 2016/2017, as
presented at the March 28, 2012 Public Board Meeting.
3. Interim Policy 386 – “Employee Use of Electronic and Social Media Communication”
The Board of Education approved the interim Policy 386 “Employee Use of Electronic and Social
Media Communication” as the final School District No. 23 (Central Okanagan) social media policy
for employees, and that the policy be brought back to the Education and Student Services
Committee within a year’s time for review.
4. Interim Policy 486 – “Student Use of Electronic and Social Media Communication”
The Board of Education approved the interim Policy 486 “Student Use of Electronic and Social
Media Communication” as the final School District No. 23 (Central Okanagan) social media policy
for students, and that the policy be brought back to the Education and Student Services Committee
within a year’s time for review.
5. New Policy 387 – “Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy”
The Board of Education approved new Policy 387 – “Freedom of Information and Protection of
Privacy”.
6. Naming the Proposed New Elementary School on Rosewood Drive
The Board of Education directed the Planning and Facilities Committee to initiate the process of
establishing the name for the new elementary school to be built on Rosewood Drive, as per Policy
630 “Dedication and Naming of Schools and Facilities”.
