Declaration:
Asian Heritage Month – May 2012
The Chairperson made the following Declaration:
The Board of Education declares the month of May 2012 as “Asian Heritage Month” in School
District No. 23 (Central Okanagan).
Presentation:
Heather Anderson, Arion Therapeutic Farm
Ms. Henderson provided a presentation on therapeutic riding, describing how the local non-profit farm
provides equine and animal facilitated therapies for students and adults with special needs.
Declaration:
National Day of Mourning – April 28, 2012
The Chairperson made the following Declaration:
The Board of Education declares April 28, 2012 as a Day of Mourning in School District No. 23
(Central Okanagan) and observes a moment of silence to honour those workers who have been
hurt or who have lost their lives in the course of doing their work.
Superintendent’s Report:
The Superintendent reported on the following:
– Issues regarding Bill 22 and the current labour dispute continue to be worked through at a
District and school level. The amount of teacher invo
lvement in extra-curricular activities is still
yet to be determined. It is anticipated that graduation ceremonies will continue; however,
teacher involvement may be different than in previous years.
– As a result of schools participating in the annual Terry Fox Run this past year, School District
No. 23 schools raised $24,654.59 for cancer research.

1. School Act Class Size/Class Composition Update Report: March 2012
The Board of Education approved the School Act Cl
ass Size/Class Composition Update Report for
the month of March 2012, and that the Declaration of Appropriate Learning Situation by the
Superintendent be approved for submission to the Minister of Education.
2. Capital Projects Bylaw No. 126383 – 2012/2013 Annual Facilities Grant
The Board of Education gave first, second and third readings and adopted School District No. 23
Capital Project Bylaw No. 126383 – Annual Facilities Grant.
3. CUPE Member Employment Opportunities During the Two-Week Spring Break
The Board of Education directed the Superintendent to discuss with CUPE the feasibility of offering
meaningful employment to those CUPE employees who are disadvantaged by the two-week Spring
Break, and that discussions take place before the Calendar Committee meets next year, and before
the 2013/2014 Budget discussions, with recommendations brought to the Board of Education in a
timely fashion.
4. Student Transportation Charge – 2012/2013
The Board of Education approved a 50% reduction in the Student Transportation Charge as
described in Policy 470 and 470R (Regulations) “Transportation Services Management” for all
students using the School District No. 23 (Central Okanagan) transportation system.
5. Trustee Indemnity for the 2012/2013 Fiscal Year
The Board of Education set the Trustee Indemnity for July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013 with no increase
to the stipend.
6. Superintendent’s 2012/2013 District Budget Recommendations
The Board of Education adopted the specific budget allocations and decisions, pertaining to the
2012/2013 Preliminary School District Budget as presented at the April 25, 2012 Public Board
Meeting, with an amendment to include the revised student transportation charge.
